Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann has been active in Portarlington for over 60 years. A branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann was set up here in 1958.
Formal music lessons for young people were started in 1964. Over 80 pupils, boys and girls, where enrolled in classes for feadóg stáin, fiddle and button accordion.
A slow down in activities in the late sixties saw the branch going into decline, its activities being informal gatherings of musicians at local sessions and at Fleadhanna Cheoil.
From the early 1970’s, with a new committee elected, a fresh impetus was gained for the promotion of all Comhaltas orientated activities.
Ever since, this Branch has had a continuous history of promoting cultural activities, hosting Fleadhanna Cheoil, holding traditional music and dancing classes, performing at all local events and competing at all Fleadhanna.
This is a very committed Branch with widespread support in the immediate locality and beyond.
There is every reason to be confident that the evident success achieved, will continue well into the future.
